On December 7, 2023, the 2nd scientific and practical conference on dentistry with international participation “Maksudov Readings” dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Magomed Magomedovich Maksudov was held in the Scientific and Educational Innovation Centre of Dagestan State Medical University.

Magomed Maksudov was a dentist and maxillofacial surgeon, professor. He was the rector of Dagestan Medical Institute for a quarter of a century, and before that he headed the Ministry of Health of Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic for eight years. This year marks the anniversary of the famous doctor and health care organiser – 110 years since his birth.

The event was held as part of the work of the North Caucasus Medical Research and Education Cluster of the North Caucasus Federal District. The event was organised by the Dagestan State Medical University of Health Ministry of the Russian Federation. The co-organisers of the conference were the North Ossetian State Medical Academy of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Dagestan, and the Stomatological Association of Russia.

The event was opened by the Rector of DSMU Visampasha Khanaliev. “Magomed Maksudov is the founder of dental service in the Republic of Dagestan, he is the first Dagestani dentist who received a broad education at the Moscow Medical Dental Institute in 1939. His professional career began as an ordinary doctor, then as head of a department. He was Health Minister of the Republic of Dagestan and Rector of DSMI. In 1965 he organised the Faculty of Dentistry; an exemplary clinical base for the Republican Dental Polyclinic was created. Assistance was rendered not only to the residents of Dagestan, but also to the entire North Caucasus. Today, Maksudov’s students head the specialised dental departments of the university.

Magomed Magomedovich was an extraordinary man who valued honesty and loyalty in people. He was sure to punish meanness, and forgave those who repented sincerely. He liked to repeat often: “If the situation is unclear, solve the issue in favour of the student”. He did a lot for the formation of our alma mater and it is his example that I am guided by in my work as rector of DSMU.

I hope that during this scientific event everyone will be able to find new connections, emphasise something useful for themselves, someone will find a common job, someone will decide on their main activity. I am very pleased that the conference is attended by representatives of all dental treatment centres of Dagestan, as well as guests from other cities,” he said.

Afterwards, the winner of the contest “Rasulov Readings”, Kamila Gadzhieva, a 2nd year student of the Dental Faculty of DSMU, delivered a poem “And I love crimson dawn”.

At the opening ceremony of the conference the First Deputy Health Minister of Dagestan Yaroslav Glazov voiced the welcome address of the Health Minister of the Republic of Dagestan Tatyana Belyaeva. Yaroslav Glazov noted that the issues raised at such conferences are very relevant for our healthcare. He also wished the conference productive work and thanked all the organisers for organising an excellent conference.

Andrey Yaremenko, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Pavlov State Pediatric Medical University, President of the Stomatological Association of Russia, addressed the participants of the conference in the format of a video message. He also highly noted the role of Magomed Maksudov in the history of formation of stomatological education in our country and wished all participants productive work.

Within the framework of the conference special congratulations and endless respect to Magomed Maksudov were sounded from Andijan Medical Institute. Head of the Department of Surgical Dentistry of ASMI Mukhamadyahya Teshaboev read out the welcome address on behalf of the Rector of the Institute Madamin Madazimov and presented it to Visampasha Khanaliev. During the conference other employees of the university were also awarded.

Then the head of the Department of Surgical Dentistry Hasan Ordashev told about the I Intrauniversity Olympiad on surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery among 5th year students “Maksudov’s Heirs”, which was held on the 6th of December 2023 on the basis of M. Maksudov’s Republican Clinical Hospital and then the names of the winners were announced and awards were given.

Then the work of the conference went according to the programme. All reports had both scientific and practical value. The topics of speakers concerned actual questions of the organisation of stomatological service. They discussed research and innovations concerning therapeutic, orthopaedic, surgical areas of dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, as well as digital dentistry.

M.D. (DSc), Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Surgical Dentistry, Andijan State Medical Institute (Republic of Uzbekistan); Dzgoeva Zalina Georgievna – Ph, Associate Professor of the Department of Dentistry No. 3, Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “North Ossetian State Medical Academy” of the Ministry of Health of Russia.

The conference became a good platform for exchange of experience, familiarisation with new methods, scientific achievements, as well as problems that determined and define further development of dentistry.
