History of the Department

The Department of General Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine has been organized since 1934 and is the oldest department of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution “DSMU” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The first head of the department was Professor Ya. D. Savitsky, later in different years: Professor Dr. A. B. Frenkel (a practicing doctor until 1938); Associate Professor Ta.Mac. Makletsov, Professor M. T. Nagorny; Professor in Science.Mo. Askerkhanov, Associate Professor R. I. Levin from 1959 to 1961; Professor N. Ts Tsakhaev from 1963 to 1968 ; Professor D. M. Dalgat; from 1974 to 1976; Associate Professor M. P. Churukyan; Professor A. Z. Magomedov from 1976 to 1987; Professor A. I. Khamidov  from 1987 to 2002.The position of head of the department is occupied by Professor R. T. Medzhidov from 2002 to the present.

The leading scientific and practical directions of the department are:

• Development and introduction into clinical practice of endoscopic methods of diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases of the abdominal cavity.
• Mechanical stimulation of angiogenesis in ischemia of organs and tissues.
• Questions of diagnosis and treatment of abdominal echinococcosis.
• Endovascular and endobiliary surgery in the pathology of the hepatopancreatoduodenal zone.
• Development and introduction into clinical practice of methods of treatment of trophic ulcers and purulent wounds.
• Reconstructive repair operations for strictures and injuries of the biliary tract.
• Introduction of high-tech surgical interventions into clinical practice.
