The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was organized with a course of perinatology of the Faculty of Advanced Training of Doctors under the leadership of the Honored Scientist of the RSFSR and DASSR in 1985, associate member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor S. M. A. Omarov. The department has been headed by Professor, MD Omarov N. S.-M. since 2006,

Academic work

The main directions of postgraduate training of specialists at the department are:

• professional retraining of specialists;
• general advanced training;
• thematic advanced training;
• postgraduate study;
• clinical residency;
• internship.

Curricula are formed on the basis of:

• annual reports of medical institutions,
• applications from healthcare managers,
• a long-term plan for professional development.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the ATF and ATS of the Medical Academy was created to train obstetricians and gynecologists in internship, clinical residency, postgraduate studies and advanced training courses for working doctors. In addition, the tasks of the department include determining the strategy for the development of obstetric and gynecological services in the region, introducing the achievements of medical science into the practice of healthcare. Thus, the social order of the Ministry of Health, society is being fulfilled.

Every year, more than 20 doctors and more than 50 interns complete their clinical residency, 140-200 doctors undergo general and thematic improvement. Trained doctors perform search work, speak at clinical conferences and meetings of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of the republic, take part in the publishing activities of the department. A standard of practical skills has been developed for all categories of students and this is especially taken into account at the certification exam.

The department is a supplier of qualified personnel, not only for Dagestan, but also for other regions and some foreign countries: Jordan, Palestine, Syria, etc.

Scientific work

One of the main indicators of the successful activity of the department for the period 1999-2012 are 74 defended candidate and doctoral dissertations, 76 published monographs, 13 methodological guidelines and recommendations, 13 textbooks, 4 inventions. Two books of selected lectures on obstetrics and gynecology. 22 more dissertation studies of practitioners are in the process of being completed. According to the results of scientific research, 17 new methods of diagnosis and treatment have been introduced into practice. Имеются акты внедрения. Among them: optimization of prenatal preparation, delivery and breastfeeding for hypertension, arterial hypotension, a combination of iron deficiency anemia and rhesus-sensitized pregnancy, kidney diseases, obesity, recurrent and persistent threat of termination of pregnancy, macrosomia, myopia, organ-preserving operations for failure of sutures on the uterus, embolization of the uterine arteries during placenta previa during cesarean section, laparoscopic amputation, etc. extirpation.

Endoscopic surgery course

In 2009, a course of reproductive endoscopy was opened at the department (the head of the course is Candidate of Medical Sciences H. G. Aliyeva).

Specialists are trained with certification in the following areas:

• Thematic advanced training curriculum “Endoscopic methods in obstetrics and gynecology” (2 months)

Practical doctors are trained in endoscopic methods of diagnosis and treatment in obstetric and gynecological practice with the subsequent certification.

The direction of scientific research of the department corresponds to the priority national project. This is a scientific development of the problems of “Safe motherhood with extragenital pathology” and “Reproductive health of women and adolescents”.

In the light of priority scientific programs, the department participated in the implementation of the agreement between the DRC of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Ministry of Health of the RD on the scientific program “Family Health. Medical and social research”. The result was the publication of monographs and methodological recommendations for family doctors. The program is completed and accepted by the customer. At the moment, the staff of the department is involved in the implementation of the program “Health of the elderly of Dagestan. Medical and social research”. A monothematic issue of the journal “Medicine. Science and practice” on the first stage of the program implementation.

The main scientific directions of the department are:

The regional magazine “Medicine: Science and Practice” is published, edited by the director of the Dagestan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, M. A. Omarov. 4 monothematic issues on the problems of obstetrics and gynecology have been published.

Specialists of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the ATF and ATS conduct a wide variety of types of surgical interventions and use many methods of providing assistance to women in need.

Here are some types of surgical interventions of specialists of this department:

1. Caesarean section;
2. Natural delivery;
3. Hysterectomies — total,subtotal (laparoscopic, laparotomic access);
4. Operations for pelvic organ prolapse;
5. Sling operations for stress urinary incontinence in women. It should be noted that this operation was carried out by our specialists for the first time
6. Myomectomy by laporoscopic and laporotomy access.
7. Vaginal hysterectomy;
8. Laparoscopic operations, therapeutic and diagnostic for infertility, neoplasms of the reproductive system ( cysts, fibroids), endometriosis.

Medical work

The base of the department-maternity hospital No. 3 at the RCH-is the most advanced obstetric institution, which has specialized clinical departments for mothers and children, departments of laboratory and functional research methods in its structure. The gynecological departments of the clinic were transformed into endoscopic ones, which made it possible to introduce modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods into practice. The work carried out made it possible to create a new structure — a scientific, industrial and educational association capable of solving all aspects of the department’s activities at a high level.

The clinic is a collector of all complex and severe pathology not only from the cities and districts of the Republic, but also from Chechnya. This largely explains the relatively favorable quality indicators of the obstetric and gynecological service in the Republic.

The department plays a leading role in the organization and conduct of the medical and diagnostic process at clinical bases. The implementation of the achievements of medical science and new technologies in practice is carried out by the department.

Laboratory of Functional Diagnostics

Since 1985, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of ATF and ATS, a laboratory of functional diagnostics has been functioning, which serves other departments of the RCH. It is equipped with modern medical equipment, studies of hormones of the fetoplacentar complex, methods of functional diagnostics in gynecology are carried out. The joint work of the department with the practical health authorities includes:

1. Consulting of complex and severe patients in all specialized departments of the RCH and other hospitals. Participation in consultations.
2. All teachers annually work for one month with their groups of interns and clinical residents in antenatal clinics on the sites and reception..
3. Cluster seminars are held annually at the suggestion of the Ministry of Health on topical issues of the specialty.

1. Emergency care to cities and districts is carried out through the air ambulance, where the staff of the department is part-time staff, PhD Dabuzov A. Sh. and Aligadzhiev M. A., often clinical residents and interns go to the call together with them.
2. Employees of the clinic supervise all cities and districts. Memo for them compiled by the department and in the analysis of their work participates the department.
3. In the direction of the Ministry of Health, we train specialists through clinical residency and postgraduate studies. Moreover, at least 15 doctors annually defend their dissertations through the competition and correspondence postgraduate studies. This number does not include the dissertations of the institute’s employees.
4. On behalf of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation of the Academy, the department oversees the obstetric and gynecological service of the North Caucasian Republics with field visits, analysis of activities and submission of a certificate to the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation for discussion. Of particular note is the assistance to Chechnya and Ingushetia. First, complex and severe patients from these republics come to our clinic. Secondly, all doctors of these regions are improving their skills at our department. Thirdly, we train highly qualified specialists for them in clinical residency, correspondence and full-time postgraduate studies. A scientific and practical conference was held in Grozny on topical issues of obstetrics-gynecology and perinatology.
5. Analysis of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity in the Republic.
