History

In connection with the release of Order No. 237 of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation in 1992 “On the gradual transition to public service on the principle of a general practitioner/ family doctor”, there was a need to train such specialists for the Republic of Dagestan. Their training was carried out at the Department of  Therapy  of Advanced Training Faculty (head – prof. Kazanbiev N.K.) in 1993-95.

By a joint decision of  State Administration of Educational Institutions of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Head – Professor Volodin N.N.), the Ministry of Health of  Dagestan (Minister – Ibragimov I.M.) and the Academic Council of the DSMA (Chairman – Rector Professor Golubev A.M.) it was decided to create a new department of family medicine as part of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education. The acting head of the department by order of the rector was appointed Associate professor of the Department of Therapy of  FPE, Doctor of Medical Sciences Abdullaev A.A. The new department included: Ph.D. Associate Professor of the Department of Therapy of FPE Gadzhikuliev A.S.; Ph.D. assistant Abdulpatakhov D.D.; correspondence graduate student of the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases of RSMU (Moscow) assistant Kallaeva A.N.; art. laboratory assistants – Aivazova Z., Ibragimova U. and Mungieva E.

To accommodate the staff of the department and support staff, three rooms were allocated in the polyclinic on the territory of the Republican Association “Ambulance”, 2 study rooms in the inpatient medical building for the educational process,12 cardiological and 11 therapeutic beds as a clinical base. Assistant Abdulpatakhov D.D. used multidisciplinary departments of the Republican Clinical Hospital as a clinical base for the educational process. These clinical bases were mainly used for teaching internal medicine. In order to train doctors in the other three main disciplines (pediatrics, surgical diseases, obstetrics and gynecology) and 11 related disciplines (neurology, ophthalmology, infectious diseases, phthisiology, skin and venereal diseases, dentistry, traumatology, psychiatry, non-drug therapy), employees of other departments and courses of FPE of DSMA were involved. A part-time postgraduate student of the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 1 of RSMU (Moscow) Gafurova R.M. was accepted as a 0.5-rate assistant of the department in 1997.

By the decision of the Academic Council of the Academy and by the order of the rector,  the department was renamed the Department of Cardiology and Family Medicine with the transfer to it as a clinical base of the cardiology department of  Russian Society of Emergency Medical Care for 60 beds in 2000 . It was renamed again into the Department of Polyclinic Therapy, Cardiology and General Medical Practice in October 2006.

Academic work

The department is multifunctional – it conducts professional retraining and advanced training of doctors in five specialties: cardiology, general medical practice, therapy, emergency medical care, functional diagnostics.

Research work

The department is developing a scientific problem dedicated to acute coronary syndrome, secondary prevention of coronary heart disease in the post-infarction period. In 1999- Kallaeva A.N., in 2000 – Gafurova R.M., in 2001 – Islamova U.A., in 2009 – Umakhanova Z.A. defended their dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. Assistant Kallaeva A.N. defended her dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in 2011, senior laboratory assistant Habchabov R.G. – for the degree of Candidate of medical Sciences.

Head of the Department prof. Abdullaev A.A. is an Honored Doctor and Scientist of the Republic of Dagestan, the chairman of the Dagestan Republican Branch and a member of the Presidium of the Board of the Russian Cardiological Society. He is a chairman of Dagestan Republican branches – the Association of General Practitioners of the Russian Federation, the Scientific Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis and the Russian Public Health Association, a Member of the Dissertation Council of the DSMA. Member of the editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals: Russian Journal of Cardiology, Atherosclerosis and Dyslipidemia, Palliative Medicine and Rehabilitation, Russian Family Doctor and Bulletin of the Dagestan State Medical Academy, Honorary Cardiologist of Russia.

The department has working programs and teaching materials for doctors, books and lectures (multimedia discs, paper media) on all sections of the curriculum.
